Seniors Services Society is an amalgamation of the Seniors Housing Information Program Society and the Western Society for Seniors Citizens Services. The new society was incorporated in February 2006 and now offers over fifty years of combined experience serving seniors in the BC lower mainland. The new society is proud to continue a strong legacy of volunteerism and is governed by a volunteer Board of Directors. |
Seniors Housing Information Program, SHIP, founded in 1987 provided information on housing and services for seniors across the BC lower mainland. Services offered included: publishing a province wide web based seniors housing directory, one on one housing counseling, community education on the housing and services needs of seniors including Housing Counselor training to volunteers of seniors organizations and services providers so they may provide information in their own communities. Later on in the Society's growth and as a result of an identified client need the organization began providing Outreach Services to those who are homeless or at risk of homelessness.
The Western Society served the community from 1974 - 2005. Staff and volunteers provided a variety of support services including - Meals on Wheels, Grocery Shopping, Dining Club, Lunch Programs, Support Calls, Tax Clinics and Information and Referral services. The Western Society was considered a key seniors service provider in New Westminster.
Under a mutually created vision that:
"All older adults are well supported, adequately housed, contributing and valued in a healthy community"
the Seniors Services Society provides four key service areas based on the original work of the amalgamated societies:
The Society, its members and Board of Directors, meet annually for the Annual General Meeting of the Society. The AGM report for 2011 is here.
