Seniors Services Task Force

Goals

The New Westminster Seniors Services Task Force (SSTF) is a group of service agencies, community representatives and seniors who want to improve the lives of New Westminster seniors. The SSTF pursues projects originating from the SSTF Report of April 2007. The Report identified 28 recommendations and drafted action plans. Projects are developed based on available resources, which include people as well as funding. The SSTF welcomes seniors interested in volunteering to help develop projects with service agencies and community representatives. SSTF meetings are held five times a year.

Projects focus on six key areas:

1. Housing and the built environment
2. Security and safety
3. Transportation
4. Education and communication
5. Personal assistance, support and recreation
6. Health and mental health services

1. April 2009: Approval for a BEAT Grant (Built Environment Active Transportation) to conduct a wheelability assessment of uptown and downtown New Westminster.
2. Publication of the New Westminster Directory of Services for Seniors in November 2008. 17,000 copies were distributed to doorsteps throughout the City and a web version is in development. Funding was provided in part through the Union of BC Municipalities.
3. Three "IMBY Fairs - In My Back Yard: Connecting Seniors to Services" were held in June, September and October 2008. Located in three different city neighbourhoods, over 400 seniors attended these information events. They enjoyed speakers, entertainment and met with service providers. Feedback surveys were overwhelmingly positive. Funding was provided in part through the Union of BC Municipalities.
