Housing Counsellor Training
Housing Counsellor Training is for social service workers or volunteers working with seniors who have limited resources and need housing information and support.
Past Housing Counsellor Training has included presentations from Information Services Vancouver, Vancouver Coastal and Fraser Health Authorities, HRSDC, BC Housing, Seniors Services Society staff and other seniors housing specialists.
Course content may include:
- Understanding aging and how it relates to housing needs
- Types of housing for seniors - information on subsidized rental housing for seniors, Assisted Living and Residential Care, the BC Housing Registry, SAFER and other types of seniors housing and assistance
- Seniors housing information and referral including government and community resources, services and agencies
- Communication and counselling skills including client intake
- The Seniors Housing Directory of BC
- Income, pensions and subsidies for Seniors
- Tours of housing for seniors

There is an applicant screening process in place to ensure this course is being effectively utilized by individuals working directly with seniors needing housing support. Social workers, shelter and outreach workers, information and referral volunteers and other front-line workers interfacing with seniors needing housing support on a regular basis would especially benefit from this course.
Spring session is scheduled for
March 7th, 2012 to April 25th, 2012
Cost $100
Classes are held one day per week for a total of 8 weeks.
