Nurturing Compassion in Our Community
Seniors Services Society of BC (SSSBC) staff recently experienced a moment of extraordinary generosity. An encounter with a remarkable person left a heartfelt mark on our organization and a story worth sharing filled with compassion and community support.
With the spirit of the holidays on her side, Joan Galbraith came to our offices in December and shared her narrative—a story that beautifully embodied the essence of giving. December 23rd held a significant place in Joan’s heart. It’s her birthday and marks the anniversary of her mother’s passing several years ago. In the face of personal grief, Joan chose a path paved with compassion and kindness, dedicating the past 32 years to supporting seniors and adopt-a-familiy programs.
Her connection to our community runs deep, as her mother was a resident at the Legion. Joan’s commitment to honouring her mother’s memory took a touching form—a $1,000 worth of gift cards intended to help seniors in need.
The gift cards were a generous contribution from Joan and her office staff at Klohn Crippen Berger, who raised funds during various office events such as 50/50’s, Bingo, and Christmas bake sales. These cards found their way into the hands of our senior clients. As we distributed them for groceries this winter, SSSBC staff witnessed smiles and gratitude. The gift cards became more than just a monetary contribution; they were a source of joy, connection, and a reminder that in times of need, our community stands together.
In our conversations with Joan, the idea of capturing her story emerged. SSSBC believes that by encouraging donors to share their motivations for supporting seniors, we can create powerful advocacy tools. Many seniors we serve are hesitant to seek help, and the personal stories of donors can break down those barriers, inspiring others to join the cause.
To our donors like Joan and the employees at Klohn Crippen Berger, your stories matter. Your motivations, compassion, and generosity create a unity of support that strengthens our community.
As we step into a new year, we invite you all to consider the impact your generosity can make. Together, we can continue to build a community where every individual, especially our seniors, feels valued and supported during the holidays and throughout the year.
The simple act of giving can transform lives and create a legacy of kindness that extends far beyond the holiday season.
