The mandate of the Royal Canadian Legion is to help those in the community, whether it’s raising funds, supporting seniors or volunteering to help those in need. Each year, the New Westminster branch selects a local charity for its holiday fundraiser.

Last year, Branch #2 of the Royal Canadian Legion got behind Santa for Seniors in a big way. Through its weekly meat and 50/50 draws, it raised $3,500 and used that money to make 120 seniors sacks filled with small gifts so that local seniors wouldn’t feel forgotten over the holidays.

“The response to last year’s Santa for Seniors campaign was amazing because we let everyone know where the money was going,” said Michelle Lapre, Operations Manager and Secretary of Branch 2 in uptown New Westminster. “Many of our members are seniors, so they relate to the mission of the SSSBC to help seniors navigate housing and support services they need to live with dignity, not to mention feeling included, especially at the holidays.”

Michelle recalled how much fun it was for everyone putting the bags together.

“We had an assembly line going and the ladies made sure that the bags looked festive.”

They also wanted to add a personal touch, so each bag contained a hand-written card wishing each senior a happy holiday.

“Whether volunteers were purchasing gifts, assembling bags or writing out cards, everyone felt great knowing that they were brightening someone’s holiday and bringing a smile to a senior’s face,” said Michelle.

Our thanks to everyone at the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #2 for making last year’s Santa for Seniors campaign such a success and helping local seniors not feel forgotten.
