Volunteering has long been a way of life for Seniors Services Society driver Gary. In fact, Gary has been putting his hand up to volunteer since his children were in preschool, putting his skills as an accountant to use as Treasurer of organizations large and small. But Gary likes to be “hands-on” and make a direct impact, which is why he now volunteers to be a Medical Transportation driver.
For seniors who need to attend medical appointments, finding suitable transportation can be a struggle, especially for those with limited income. Family members may not be available, and taxis are expensive. Gary not only provides valuable transportation with his own vehicle, but also provides social interaction and reassurance to his passengers, who definitely appreciate the support.
Gary often volunteers for long-distance driving, as some drivers are not comfortable driving far or can’t commit the time. He is not only highly dependable and compassionate with his clients, but Gary often adjusts his schedule to accommodate last minute requests. “It’s extremely fulfilling to help someone in need. I just want to make it as easy as possible for them”, Gary explained.
Prior to becoming a Medical Transportation driver, Gary delivered meals to seniors and also helped seniors complete their tax returns. As a senior himself, Gary knows how important these services are.
In October 2024, Gary was honoured with a Community Service Award at the Seniors of Distinction Awards from AgeCare; a trusted provider of aging in place communities for seniors. Volunteers from Hope to Squamish were nominated for awards with only four winners chosen. His reaction when he won that night was priceless. “I was gob smacked, not only to be nominated, but to win. I couldn’t believe that my work warranted such an award, but I appreciate it”, he remarked.
Thanks to volunteer drivers like Gary, seniors in New Westminster not only get to their medical appointments safely, but with a friendly and compassionate driver at a time when they need it most.
